Wompo Publishers Newspaper
News this week from Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Verse Wisconsin, Tilt-a-Whirl (back issues of the newspaper are archived at the Wompo festival of women's poetry here: wompherence.proboards.com ).
1.
Beltway Poetry Quarterly, edited by WOMPO Kim Roberts, has published a new issue of the online journal, which can be read at www.beltwaypoetry.com.
The Spring 2010 issue is the fourth in a series of special issues documenting the rich literary history of Washington, DC. The Literary Organizations issue celebrates groups and organizations that have nurtured writers in the region, providing important places to gather, workshop, publish, learn, and read.
Of particular note are two essays by current WOMPOs: Julie R. Enszer's "Have Fun So We Do Not Go Mad in Male Supremacist Heterosexual Amerika: Lesbian-Feminist Poetry in The Furies," and Grace Cavalieri's "Poetry is in the Air: 'The Poet & The Poem.'"
Also: former WOMPO Gray Jacobik writes about The Capital Hill Poetry Group. There are 14 essays in all, covering the DC Slam Team, two important African American bookstores (Drum & Spear and Karibu), DC Poets Against the War, the Washington Friends of Walt Whitman, the women's spoken word series mothertongue, and much more.

Verse Wisconsin, versewisconsin.org, is accepting submissions through May 1st for the Summer online issue on the theme of Work. That issue will also feature an interview with Martín Espada. Poets do not need to have a connection to Wisconsin to publish with us, though we do enjoy hearing about what connections you do have, however tangential. Visit the website for more details. Contact us with questions/submissions: editors (at) versewisconsin (dot) org
3.
Tilt-a-Whirl, a "sporadical" of repeating-form poetry published by Kate Bernadette Benedict, has just hit the virtual presses and features some interesting new-to-the-Tilt forms: the Ovillejo, Treint-sei and Blues Stanza. Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis.
