DECK OF CARDS
I can tell you object to the impossibility of my design –
but if it is, it is: cards balanced on corners, shadows that do not fall
where they are cast – you will have to grant me who I am.
I have been building myself into this sculpture for a long time –
my many faces hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds. Others
have joined me from time to time and most stay, merged
into my patterns, though I do not remember all of them. Only the animals
hold themselves apart though they too are strangely still.
On my backs – bearded men, carpets, buildings. Who lived in that one,
there beyond the fountain? (And where was that fountain?)
Or the windmill – oh, I remember the windmill! A drawbridge creaked above a canal
and we bought wheels of smoked cheese in the unnatural quiet.
As for this place I am in now – it is high up, like a tree house,
nothing but sky outside the door.

oh Lisken, thank you for posting this poem! I did enjoy reading it, and such a clever metaphor ... I must go look what else of your work is in the Fest

"Only the animals // hold themselves apart / though they too are strangely still."
So many crystalline lines in this piece! Thanks for posting it.
