Brief description of your press and its mission:ARKTOI BOOKS, an imprint of Red Hen Press, was established in 2006 by Eloise Klein Healy to publish literary works of high quality by lesbian writers. The mission of Arktoi Books is to give lesbian writers more access to "the conversation" that having a book in print affords. Submissions by both new and established authors are welcome. See the schedule below for submission dates. Each year the imprint will publish a minimum of one book.
Arktoi Books is named for the arktoi or "bears," young girls in the service of Artemis who lived for a year at her sanctuary at Brauron, east of Athens
The colophon for Arktoi Books was designed by Mark Cull, based on figures on a fragment of pottery unearthed at the Temple of Artemis Brauron.

Information on submissions:1. Each year, submissions will be accepted from August through November. Submissions sent at other times will be returned unread.
2. Poetry manuscripts should be between 50 and 80 pages.
3.Fiction and nonfiction manuscripts may be of any length.
4. Poetry manuscripts should be submitted as an attachment to an email (Microsoft Word file or .pdf file) to:

5. Please note--Fiction or nonfiction manuscripts should be submitted hardcopy to:

6. The cover page of the manuscript should include the name, address, phone number, and email address of the writer.
7. A cover letter, sent via email with a poetry manuscript (or hardcopy with fiction or nonfiction manuscript), should present a short biographical statement by the writer and a brief overview of the work.

will be accepted in poetryWhat the press really wants to see in manuscripts is high quality work. The press is committed to publishing the best writing by lesbian writers and/but adheres to no specific restrictions regarding content nor to one aesthetic.
What makes the press cringe?
A submission that assumes that lesbian erotica is what the press is looking for.
Contests:
Arktoi Books does not sponsor a contest, nor does the press charge a submission fee.

Promotion for authors:
All Arktoi Books are promoted by Red Hen Press and by the marketing services of Arktoi Books. Along with activities sponsored or arranged by Arktoi/Red Hen, Arktoi authors are expected to be very active in arranging readings and events for their own benefit and to coordinate these readings with Arktoi/Red Hen. A generous number of review copies are sent out by Arktoi marketing services. All books and authors are featured at the Red Hen website, the eloisekleinhealy website, and a new stand-alone Arktoi webpage that will be up and running by the end of 2008.
