Wompo Publishers Newspaper
News this week from Ahsahta Press, Talking Writing, Plain View Press, Verse Wisconsin, Journal of Renga & Renku, Reaching Review (back issues of the newspaper are archived at the Wompo festival of women's poetry here: wompherence.proboards.com ).
1. Ahsahta Press announces the September 15 publication of two new books:
Iteration Nets by Karla Kelsey (author of Knowledge, Forms, the Aviary)
Pleasure by Brian Teare (author of Sight Map)
More information about the books is available at:
ahsahtapress.boisestate.edu
2. Talking Writing, an online journal, includes a poetry feature edited by Carol Dorf in each monthly issue. Although intended for a general audience, TW is open to longer poems and complex work. Our first two poets are Jessica Greenbaum and Camille Martin.
Please submit 8-10 pages to editor@talkingwriting.com in an .rtf or word.doc (not docx) attachment.
3. Plain View Press announces the publication of "Songs of Isthar: Iraqi Poetry Since the Seventies," an anthology of contemporary Iraqi poets edited by Soheil Najm, translated by Soheil Najm and Dr. Sadek R. Mohammed, and edited in English by Susan Bright. This group of poets, new to English language readers, includes the work of both men and women poets. We are honored to be able to present this anthology. For information -- email Susan Bright, sb@plainviewpress.net. Najm will be in the US, in Oregon, in early November coinciding with the official release of the anthology.
4. Verse Wisconsin 104 is now available in print and online (www.versewisconsin.org) and includes prose and poetry about belief, as well as an interview with Milwaukee poet-philosopher John Koethe, the 2010 Academy of American Poets' Lenore Marshall Prize winner for his book, Ninety-fifth Street.
As always, the online & print versions are complementary but different: Verse Wisconsin magazine includes poetry about belief and reflections on spirituality and poetry. VWOnline features "On the Road" poems, two inspiring projects that incorporate poetry & art, audio, reviews & more. Numerous Wom-po members are included both in print and online!
When you stop by to look at the issue, check out two current calls for work:
1) “Poems in forms"--We’re interested in everything from sonnets and villanelles to abecedariums and nonce forms (the kind you make up for a particular poem). And we’re interested in everyone, from the die-hard old-school formalist to the newbie who’s intrigued to try something different. Play! Send us your formal poems… AND a brief (or not-so-brief) prose statement about the writing of the poem. How and why did you choose this particular form? Did you run into difficulties? Surprises? How did the use of form affect the writing process for you? Remember: “formal” doesn’t mean old-fashioned or archaic! We’ll be looking for conversational and/or cutting edge. Deadline: Nov 1.
2) A joint call, The Jawbreaker Poetry Project, a collaboration between Poetry Jumps Off the Shelf and Verse Wisconsin. Full guidelines and more details are at the PJOS website. www.poetryjumpsofftheshelf.com. Make submissions to Poetry Jumps Off the Shelf only. Deadline: Nov 30.

A couple of weeks ago I launched a new blog called the Reaching Review with an interview of Lesley Wheeler, one of the WOM-PO mainstays and author of the recently released book of poems Heterotopia.
The mission of the blog is still being defined but it will dovetail with the mission of Reaching Productions itself: to foster creative expression in all individuals, with a special focus on creating friendly, affirming spaces for women, queers, and people of color.
Guest bloggers and suggestions for future reviews, essays, or articles are welcome. Please contact me at frances@reaching.org with your ideas or feedback.
