News this week from Via Negativa, qarrtsiluni, The Spoon River Poetry Review (back issues of the newspaper are archived at the Wompo festival of women's poetry here: wompherence.proboards.com ).

This week on the Woodrat podcast at Via Negativa, Ren Powell talks about how living in Norway and translating Norwegian poets (and also a Yemeni poet) have shaped her own growth as a writer. As Ren describes it, working closely with poets to translate their work into one's own language sounds like a viable alternate to getting an MFA in poetry. Her description of the poetry publishing system in Norway should also provide ample food for thought. Life under socialism sounds pretty good!

The Spoon River Poetry Review. New editor; call for submissions
Dear Wompos,
I’d like to introduce myself both as a subscriber to the listserv for the past year or so and as new editor of The Spoon River Poetry Review. I’ll send a more thorough and personal intro to the listserv, but for the newsletter I’d like to invite you to submit your poetry to Spoon River, whether you are an old fan or completely new to the magazine, as I’m eager to diversify both content and readership of the magazine. As editor, my aim is to publish excellent work from many styles and perspectives, even (especially) those that seem – or have been situated critically – as at odds.
I am also looking for high-quality translations, as well as reviewers (we will be restoring substantive book reviews to the magazine as a permanent fixture). As I put it in (the forthcoming) Poet’s Market, we are looking for poems that are as intellectually and emotionally ambitious as they are attentive to technique. We are currently reading submissions through April 15th (postmark). Send submissions to: The Spoon River Poetry Review, 41/Publications Unit, Illinois State University, Normal IL 61790-4241.
The Spoon River Poetry Review Editors’ Prize Contest, $1,000.00, 5/1.
I’d also like to invite submissions to our annual Editors’ Prize Contest (up to three poems; postmark deadline May 1st). The winner will receive $1000.00 and two runners up will receive $100.00 each. Winners, runners up, and honorable mentions will be published in the Summer/Fall 2010 issue (my first).
The $15.00 reading fee includes a one-year subscription. Please see our website for complete submission and contest details (we’re in the process of updating the website, too!):
www.litline.org/Spoon.
And finally, if you’d like to subscribe to the magazine, the cost is $15.00 for individuals, $18.00 for institutions. Our state funding was cut by over 70% percent this year, so we are in serious need of grass-roots support. To subscribe, send a check or money order (made out to The Spoon River Poetry Review), to The Spoon River Poetry Review, 4241 Department of English, Illinois State University, Normal, IL 61790-4241.
I look forward to reading your work and to hearing your feedback!
Yours, Kirstin
