Special Theme Issue Lesbian Poetry – When? And Now!
Deadline: March 1, 2010
Lesbian Poetry – When? And Now!
Poetry has long been important to lesbians, lesbian
publishing, and lesbian identity. The Daughters of Bilitis
took the name of the organization from the lesboerotic
poems of Pierre Louys, Songs of Bilitis. From the Sappho
fragments to the words of Gertrude Stein, Alice
Dunbar-Nelson, Renee Vivien, Michael Field (two women
writing with a pseudonym), Adah Isaacs Menken, Emily
Dickinson, Angelina Weld Grimké, Muriel Rukeyser, May
Sarton and hundreds of other mid- and late- twentieth
century poets, what it means to be lesbian is often
expressed and understood through poetry.
This issue of Sinister Wisdom seeks poems by thirty to forty
contemporary lesbian poets, each paired with a poem by a
lesbian poet of yore. Think about what work inspires your
work and submit creative, eclectic, interesting, and
unusual pairings for consideration.
Some notes about submission:
• Each pair should include a poem by the contemporary poet
and a “poet of yore.”
• The submitter should provide a bio of both poets include
in the submission.
• Poets are encouraged to submit up to three pairs of poems
for consideration.
• Pairings of poems and visual art work are also welcome.
• Other creative responses to the theme are welcome.
• Permission to print both poems must be secured by the submitter.
Please discuss copyright and permission with the guest
editor well in advance of deadline.
Deadline: March 1, 2010.

We're very excited about the line-up of authors--inside Wisconsin and outside--and appreciate Wom-po members' great support of the magazine, from sending submissions to subscribing to telling your friends about the opportunity to read and publish in VW!
We're simultaneously reading submissions for our April Issue, which will feature an interview of Matthea Harvey. Our new online theme (Feb 1 deadline) is "Alternate Realities"--visit the website for details, versewisconsin.org. The print issue has no particular theme and reads year-round. Beltway Poetry Quarterly announces our Tenth Anniversary Issue, published on January 1, 2010. I can't believe we've been doing this for ten years!
This special issue is a tribute to guest editors. Guest editors have been integral to Beltway Poetry Quarterly since its inception, and 15 have generously given their time and expertise since January 2000.
Highlights include posthumous poems from Hilary Tham, Andrea Carter Brown's first poems in the journal, from her remarkable series on 9-11, and the very first published poems by Katie Davis (well loved for her nonfiction and radio commentary). Visual art for this issue is provided by Kathy Keler, who suggested the idea for Beltway Poetry Quarterly, provided a home for the journal on washingtonart.com, designed its look, and has served as webmaster.
A full list of contributors: Kwame Alexander, Naomi Ayala, Andrea Carter Brown, Sarah Browning, Regie Cabico, Grace Cavalieri, Teri Ellen Cross, Katie Davis, Brian Gilmore, Merrill Leffler, Toni Asante Lightfoot, Saundra Rose Maley, Maureen Thorson, and Dan Vera.
Beltway Poetry is an online journal of the greater Washington, DC region, with an extensive resource bank serving the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Subscriptions are free. Kim Roberts, Editor.
