Rent by Jane Cooper submitted by Ellen Goldstein It was love at first sound. I was in the kitchen in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, making dinner, listening to NPR, when I heard it: “Rent” by Jane Cooper. The poem is graceful, rhythmic, and striking. The opening and closing lines of this poem stick with me, sometimes getting caught in my head like a song. The first line, “If you want my apartment, sleep in it,” rings out with frustration like the parting shot of an argument. The poem demands to be heard. The last line is measured, but rich with the conflict between desire and acceptance: “Not a roof, but a field of stars.” Hear Rent Read: www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15464Read about the poet: www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/241
