The Comstock Review

Intro / background / mission /history of your 'zine:
The Comstock Review is now entering its twenty-third year of publication, and we continue to publish some of the finest Poetry being written in North America today. Long respected for its quality and integrity of purpose, TCR remains sustained solely by its readers and contributors, with benefit of neither private endowment, nor Municipal/University funding.
In this age of constant noise and unwanted interruption, we have tried to make a quiet place for Art to Be, a place where one can take some time to think, to take a fresh look at the world that runs past, too often unnoticed; at the lives of those around us, too often unconsidered.
The Comstock Review is proud of its long-established reputation of publishing the finest known and unknown poets throughout North America. We choose our poems solely on the basis of what we consider to be their artistic merits. We are not swayed by long publishing histories. We do not publish single haiku, and rarely publish anything over two pages unless we find it exceptional and deserving of so much space. We are not afraid of the avant-garde, but shy from the overly obscure, the patently religious and the needlessly graphic.
What we love is:
- Well crafted verse, either traditional or non-traditional
- Consistency of Metaphor
- Freshness of Imagery and Diction
- Effective use of Poetic sound devices
- Something that casts new light on the world
Editors/owner:
John M Bellinger Managing editor/Peggy Flanders Assistant Managing editor.
We have a Staff of thirteen seasoned and experienced poets and editors with a fair diversity of literary preferences. I think it is this diversity of consensus that is one of our strongest assets as an editorial body. We have had a series of outstanding judges for our Annual contest, The Muriel Craft Bailey Award, including such notables as Ellen Bryant Voight and Mary Oliver. 2008 Judge is Marie Howe, 2009 Maxine Kumin.

Explore our website – it is full of poetry samples, editors poems, book reviews, and many other helpful features.
Our editors are encouraged to comment on any rejected submissions – I do many of the rejections myself, and feel that communicating with the artist is a very positive thing.
