Salem MA Reading
Diane Kendig
I'm sure others will post more thorough accounts and
corrections, but quick as I am out the door to fly home,
here are some photos and my take on this fun day:

Claire and Diane welcomed the audience of 45-50 to the
reading in the historic Presidential Hall of the Salem State
Alumni Building. Claire began by explaining what Wompo is,
insofar as anyone is able to do that, followed by Rosemary
and Ellen’s discussion on the making of the book. Then each
of the poets read a favorite poem, not her own, from the
book. Among those read were works by Janet McCann, Eloise
Klein Healy, Ann Fisher-Wirth, Barbara E. Lightner, Wendy
Taylor Carlisle, Marcia Falk, Hadara Bar-Nadav, and Cin
Salach. Then each poet read her own poem. We followed up
with a Q-A session, for which there were some challenging
questions. One person voiced surprise that “Wom” was not
pronounced “Wim” till someone (Julia?) Pointed out that we
probably didn’t want to be known as “Wimpos.”
We ended the reading by taking a page from the Wisconsin
reading and held a drawing for a free copy of the anthology.
After, there were book sales. We actually sold out of the
anthology and could have sold 10 more. And then, Wompos and
others repaired to Claire’s house for a reception where we
really got repaired.
Wompos who read were Ada Jill-Schneider, Claire Keyes, Diane
Kendig, Ellen Goldstein, Eve Rifkah, Joyce Heon, Julia
Lisella, Laura Cherry, Nancy Esposito, and Rosemary Starace.
Our wonderful audience included Wompos Martha
Carlson-Bradley and Pat Fargnoli, several Salem State
faculty members, and a few newcomers to poetry.
