Cow Tippers
Linda Simone
"I think of William Carlos Williams with Simone’s poem “Plum” and of Billy Collins’ humor
with “Poetry Daily,” wherein the speaker is sent
searching
under the bed
for the poem that got away."
-- Shaun Perkins, WomenWriters.net
Sample poem:
Root Canal
Novocain deadens pain.
Close your eyes and that man –
masked and wielding ancient torture tools –
disappears, although the whirr
of the drill still gives goose flesh.
In your mouth, a wide drain pipe,
does he read teeth like tea leaves?
Expose your sweet tooth from a smudge
of decay? Judge your age by gums
that, like a hairline, recede?
If they fish you
out of the river, all bloat and rot,
sludge clinging like dead roots,
he’s the one who will prove
past all doubt
who you are.

"In "Root Canal" that last verse just kills me: “all bloat and rot” oh so wonderful, sludging clinging."
