4. Three Workshops led by Daisy Fried
4.1. Poetry Revision Boot Camp led by Daisy Fried
September 19 to September 23, 2016 (one-week intensive) online course $500
Get ready, get set…You'll either come into workshop with a poem draft you're interested in but dissatisfied with, or, at the workshop's beginning, you'll generate a brand new first draft following a prompt designed to give you something substantial to work with. Each day, you'll overhaul the poem in a different way according to a different kamikaze revision suggestion, working towards vision and possibility and collecting tools for future revisions.
Along the way, we'll discuss process and do some light reading as you work on your revisions, and you'll be invited to comment, briefly, on other people's results. The workshop leader will supply you with detailed commentary on all your drafts at the end of the workshop. This workshop is not about tidying, but about re-seeing, and revision as discovery.
Be sure to check the "Discounts" link to the left of each course listing--which may apply to those with or earning an MFA, those taking multiple courses, those who register early, etc.). Thank you!
4.2. "Some People Have Been Unkind": A Workshop on Literary Book Reviewing led by Daisy Fried
October 3 to October 28, 2016 (four weeks) online course $500
"Some people have been unkind" is what Marilyn Monroe said about her critics. This workshop will look at literary book reviewing from aesthetic, ethical and practical angles. What are the possible approaches for reviewing? What makes for a useful review? How about an entertaining one? Is negative reviewing ethical? How can we balance judgment of quality with the limitations of personal taste? How might writing reviews help us in our creative practice? You'll look at samples of different kinds of reviews, discuss the practical and business aspects of reviewing, do reviewing exercises, and write and critique your own book reviews.
Be sure to check the "Discounts" link to the left of each course listing--which may apply to those with or earning an MFA, those taking multiple courses, those who register early, etc.). Thank you!
4.3. Four Poets: Adaptation and Rejection as Technique led by Daisy Fried
November 21 to December 16, 2016 (four weeks)online course $500
What is creative influence and how can we best use it? The first week of this course we'll read and discuss sets of poems from six different contemporary poets: Anne Carson, Ciaran Carson, Natalie Diaz, Yusef Komunyakaa, Thylias Moss and Alicia Ostriker. We'll collectively identify each poet's defining strategies, themes, attitudes and forms. For the workshop's remaining three weeks, you'll pick the four poets from this group who interest you most, writing towards and workshopping four finished poems: imitations, adaptations or-if necessary-intelligent rejections of those influences. Our goal is immersion followed by refinement of who you are as a poet after you've submitted yourself to a series of invigorating, conflicting influences.
Be sure to check the "Discounts" link to the left of each course listing--which may apply to those with or earning an MFA, those taking multiple courses, those who register early, etc.). Thank you!
5. Time to Write: A Poetry Workshop For Moms
Sunday August 7th, 1:00-4:00pm
Location: Private home in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, PA
Register by August 1st at squareup.com/store/hila-ratzabi/ .
Scribbling fragments in the middle of the night. Jotting down lines on a smart phone while breastfeeding. Squeezing in a moment of reflection between paid work and caregiving. Such is the life of a mom trying to maintain some time and space for poetry in a chaotic world. Put your hectic life on pause and nurture yourself with a poetry workshop specifically designed for moms. We will join together in meditation, free writing, and reading poems that touch on themes of motherhood and the self. You will leave this workshop with poem drafts, a fresh commitment to your creative soul, and ideas for keeping your writing practice alive within a busy schedule. Food and drink will be provided. Workshop led by Hila Ratzabi.
