4. The Poetry Box
4.1. Just released: Food Issue of The Poeming Pigeon Released by The Poetry Box
Shawn Aveningo of The Poetry Box is proud to announce the release of the latest issue of The Poeming Pigeon, just in time for the holidays!
Homer, The Poeming Pigeon mascot, has been hunting and pecking to gather the most delicious poetry for a new collection of poems from around the globe - all about food. Allow us to whet your appetite with an opening poem by Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita, Paulann Petersen, followed by a feast of verse that may not only make your mouth water, but your eyes well-up too. Food not only nourishes our body, it can feed our soul. What's your favorite food? You just might find a poem about it inside this journal of poetry.
More info and ordering found at: www.thepoetrybox.com/_DetailPagesBookstore/TPP-FoodOrderPage.html
4.2. Call for submission
The Poetry Box is open for submissions through Dec 31, 2015 for our upcoming Cannabis-Themed issue of THE POEMING PIGEON: Doobie or Not Doobie? For this issue we are looking for poetry and short prose works that speak to the medical miracles, funny stoner moments, eco-friendliness of using hemp, odes to the beauty of this alien-looking flower, and more. Regardless of which side of the issue you land, we'd love to hear from you. Details at www.ThePoemingPigeon.com.
5. Beltway Poetry Quarterly is currently seeking submissions for its April 2016 issue featuring LGBTQ poets from the region. Gowri Koneswaran and guest co-editor Venus Thrash invite writers in DC, MD, VA, WV, and DE who identify under the umbrella 'LGBTQ' to submit poems for consideration.
Though there are no restrictions on subject matter, we encourage writers to include work that reflects on erasure. For example, despite their key roles in the current Black Lives Matter movement and the Stonewall uprising decades ago, the lives and legacies of transgender women of color continue to be unabashedly erased by mainstream media, as evidenced by the film Stonewall, and as murders of transgender women in the U.S. have nearly doubled since last year with little concern. Similarly, while some narratives within the LGBTQ community are widely publicized and lauded, such as this year's U.S. Supreme Court victory regarding gay marriage, other issues critical to the survival of many -- such as police brutality, high incarceration, immigration policy, and homelessness and suicide among transgender and queer youth -- are often ignored.
In the midst of this, how do LGBTQ individuals fight to prevent our erasure and to reclaim and restore our presence historically and presently in a society that otherwise keeps us marginalized?
To submit:
Writers who live or work in DC, MD, VA, WV, and DE are asked to send up to five poems by December 15th. We accept previously published poems as long as they do not appear elsewhere online (including blogs and list serves) and copyright has reverted to you. Submit online: www.beltwaypoetry.com/about-us/submissions/
