Bodies of Glass
Crystal Warren
Bodies of Glass courageously explores a personal territory
of love, loneliness and spirituality.
Sample poem:
Once Again
I wasn't going to do this again.
I thought that I was cured,
my heart firmly under control.
No more foolish infatuations.
How strange
that a single smile
could prove me so wrong.
Reviews for Bodies of Glass:
“...an expression of identity, embodiment and fragility”
-- Lauren Hills. “Poetry Rising in the Eastern Cape,” Wordstock 7
“The poems in this collection become bodies of human frailty, asking questions about self and self-knowledge. … There is a playfulness in several titles and also within the poems… the poems rely on clear and simple vocabulary to convey the sense of an individual thinking about her experiences.”
-- Marike Beyers – Nelm News
“A woman’s story; her life, her loves and losses, her body dealing with sickness and health, a complex study in poetry about forbidden and unrequited love, about dealing with being alone… Her poetry is at times sad, but is filled with hope… A quiet simplicity is shown through the poems: the simplicity of the book and the poetry is deceptive as there is such strength and truth in the words.”
-- Heather Surridge – “A Woman Seen Through Crystal,” Wordstock 7
“The poetry in Bodies of Glass comprises short, deceptively simple pieces written in a clear and direct diction – small crystalline bits of thoughts which sparkle when the light falls upon them. …
The poems never display any hint of self-pity or wallow, indeed many of them exhibit touches of delightful wryness…
Her poetry meditates on the frailties of her narrator’s body, of her faith sometimes, and even on the frangibility of fears, and all with an unflinching gaze into the narrator’s psyche.”
