"won't you celebrate with me..." from The Book of Light, by Lucille Clifton submitted by Tara Betts When I hear or read Clifton’s poem, it reminds me that there can be success in persistence and existing for another day, even when the world does not have a reflection of your experiences in it. You can carve your presence out of nearly nothing. It also has that signature Clifton style of compact lines in a concise poem of 14 lines, and her clinching last line that grips a reader. Although many of Clifton’s most memorable, anthologized and studied poems are in Blessing the Boats and Generations: A Memoir, this book is in the 1993 collection The Book of Light, which I think deserves further examination.
