For What Binds Us by Jane Hirshfield submitted by Diane Gage I have countless favorite poems, but here's an enduring one for Favorite Poems. I recently heard Jane Hirshfield read it and she related to us that it was distributed to officials, dignitaries (including the Grand Mufti of Syria), and students during a writer's tour of the Middle East. I am awed by the spacious mind and generous silence behind this poem. I love the way it expresses the complexity of human connections in such apt images and clean language. I admire the way it can apply along the scale from intimate love relationships to the relationships between groups of people, ethnicities, countries - and I savor that perfect last line - "that nothing can tear or mend."
