Leslieann Hobayan earned her BA from Lafayette College and her MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. SHe received the 1995 MacKnight Black Poetry Prize and her poetry has appeared in the Marquis and New York Quarterly.

the downtown 6 train
a grocery list crumpled between my fingers
the recipe for arroz caldo:
some ingredient forgotten
where is home?
a girl next to me clutches her Hello Kitty bag
the Little Twin Stars stickers I had in third grade
my sardine sandwich on toast:
an after-school snack Lola Merly prepared
home?
Mozart flatly banged out on the piano
lechon roasting in the backyard
chalked hopscotch board on Canal Street
Lolo Eddie's leg massages stretched us tall
where is home?
the scent of steamed dough on Mott Street
the kitchen table where I did homework
Jetina's gifts from Chinatown:
boxes of sio pao, tubs of lychees ice cream
home.
fresh bibinka in the oven
home.
Minus One karaoke
home.
Spotty the dog on my bed
home.
Jamby's raspberry velvet tart
where is home?
the uptown 6 train
brown bag of patis, pancit canton, a Pochacco wallet
the five-flight walk-up on York Avenue
no sandwich waits for me
